OOTD: Foriegn Film

I had a fun movie date with my friend Brian. We saw the French film, Bone and Rust. It was really, really good. I had to abandon our usual front-of-the-theater seats though and move way up to the nose bleeds. Shaky cam makes me pukey if I’m too close. (And even then, sometimes.)

Here’s what I wore:

12613

Red top: FatshionXchange, Old Navy, 4X
Tank: Target, 4
Skirt: Thrifted Old Navy tube dress pulled down into a skirt, XXL
Leggings: Thrifted Old Navy, XXL
Shoes (not shown), black ballet flats from Payless, 12

I’ve had the skirt forever. I just got the top in the mail. It took so long to come, I almost forgot I’d bought it! But, the color matches the skirt perfectly. Maybe because they’re both Old Navy? The dress fits me as a tube dress, but is so short when it’s pull up over my boobs that it barely covers my butt.

This outfit is a great opportunity to point out that you should always go by fit, not the size printed on the tag. The skirt and leggings are both in a size that is usually too small, but fit perfectly (except for the too-short dress thing.) I always look at the size down and the size up, if I have time when I’m out shopping. You never know!

Putting it Together (4)

Putting it Together is a weekly feature. Every Monday, I’ll find an straight-sized outfit, analyze why it works for me, then put it together in a plus size with some ideas about making it affordable. The “My Shopping List” page has a list of items that I’m hunting for and links to every PiT post.

Have a outfit in mind you’d like me to put together? Email it to me at circoluma@gmail.com.

I found this picture in Mod Cloth’s Style Gallery:

img_462w_d78cdab80f50I really love the navy/white/red colorway, and the neutral shoes that show off the cool socks. This outfit has a sort of nautical feeling to me, and it’s perfect for almost-spring. Here’s how I put it together for the fatshionista:

DSC_0054Cute, right? And best part, it’s all on clearance. And all the pieces could be worn in a thousand ways.

CL0025705PThe dress is from eShakti. I love the patterns at the bottom and the vintage cut. So cute. Plus, it’s on sale, 30 percent off, so $55.95 instead of 79.95.

0338_02511_mmThe cardigan is from Avenue. On clearance for $15.96 down from $54!

phpThumb_generated_thumbnailjpgCute little navy knee socks from sock dreams. $8.

0324_01549_mmAnd these shoes from Avenue. Marked down to $39.99 from $48. I like these flats over the heels in the inspiration photo. I just don’t do shoes like hers.

The total cost for this outfit, if you bought it today would be $119.90.

What you really need is a navy and white dress, a bright cardi, navy socks or tights, and a pair of neutral, open shoes. The best place to save some money is with the cardi. You might already have one (even if it isn’t red. Yellow or green would look cute, too.) If you keep your eyes out, you’ll be able to find one at a thrift for no more than $10. (Not much of a savings. That cardi from Avenue is a great price right now.)

If you’ve never bought from eShakti, you can give them your email and get a $25 gift code. That would make this dress about $30.

I like the socks/open shoes look, but I think my gold flats would look just as cute. And I already own them. You might already own a pair of neutral-colored shoes that would work, which would save you $40.

If you have a bright cardi and neutral shoes, you could put this together for the $30 for the dress with the gift code. Not bad!

I’m adding a navy and white dress to my shopping list. It might take a while, but I’m pretty sure I’ll find one.

Sunday Love (4)

247782 247781We’re moving! Right now we live in a 900-square foot apartment. By “we” I mean Kevin and I, plus Ruby and Nick, who is 19. The kitchen is so small, you can’t open the oven all the way! The very best part about our new house is the huge wrap around back porch. February 15th can’t get here soon enough!

376842230348003199_269489236I found this set of patio furniture at a thrift store this week. It’s a couch, a love seat, two big tables, two or three small tables, and about eight chairs. If it’s still there tomorrow morning, it’s total mine. It’ll be 60 percent off!

CL0026187VLove this dress from eShakti. It’s on sale right now, 30 percent off! Plus, if you’re a new customer they’ll email you a $25 off coupon.

CL0025223_OSPI used by $25 eShakti coupon to get this dress. It was in their outlet for $25, so it only cost me $10!

airbnbAdrienne and I are going to New York in May for Book Expo America. We spent a couple of hours last night looking at airbnb.com, where you can rent a room or an apartment from private landlords for really reasonable prices. Some of them looked amazing, for less than half the cost of a conference hotel.

game-of-thronesI’ve been watching the first two seasons of Game of Thrones again this week. Is anyone else stoked that it’s coming back in March?

tumblr_m1bacqWFcD1r2784vo1_500And . . . last but not least: This Tumblr posts scans of old Sassy magazines. Sassy was so important to me when I was a teenager. It’s a sad, sad shame that it isn’t around any more. I think I might have to start keeping an eye out for old issues to start collecting. I especially loved the “Making It” feature. It taught you how to upcycle your clothes.

My Thrifting Week: 1/25/2013

School started this week, so my days have suddenly become much busier.

I still managed to make it out thrifting with a friend to take advantage of sales for Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. Thrifting for peace, right? Why not. Thifting keeps things out of the landfill and gives them a new life, and usually contributes to good causes.

Here’s what I found this week:

PicMonkey Collage

DSC_0063I love this little crystal pendent. It only cost a dollar!

DSC_0062Pretty little vintage pendant. It reminded me of my Nana.

DSC_0060Just a light, almost-sheer white top.

DSC_0059My favorite find this week! A killer pair of almost-new quad skates in the next size up for Ruby. Which is perfect, because her current skates still fit. They cost $40, though, and these? These cost $4!

DSC_0058Two books that I couldn’t resist, even though my TBR pile is alarmingly big. Tattoo Girl is a thriller about a girl adopted by a circus fat lady. I’ll be very interested to see how that is handled. Report to come. I love Philip K. Dick!

DSC_0057Cool coloring book full of intricate kitty pictures. It’s about 1/4 of the way used already, but since it only cost a dollar, that’s okay.

DSC_0056A pretty butterfly notebook. Because I don’t have enough notebooks. Just ask my husband.

DSC_0055Adorable 1950s sewing book.

DSC_0054Two sets of vintage pillow cases, new in the package!

DSC_0053Super soft, pretty blue sweater.

DSC_0052A whole pile of vintage sewing notions, mostly buttons! The case actually came filled with the beads below, but there were so many that they spilled all over every time Ruby opened it. So, my new button suitcase. Sweet.

DSC_0050Some scraps of pretty paper. Because I can’t help myself.

DSC_0049I love this! I actually have a “squeeze from the bottom” toothpaste picture that is in a very similar style. Adore.

DSC_0048I couldn’t resist these napkins. They say, “She hadn’t decided whether to use her power for good or evil.”

DSC_0047And those beads. I mean, seriously, all the beads. So far Ruby’s favorite thing to do with them is to just dig her hands in and smoosh them around because it feels good.

OOTD: First Day of School

Today was the first day of the spring semester for me. I’ve been going to school consistently for all by the first five years of my life, and I still love the first day back after a long break! I think I might be a little sad on the first day of the fall semester, since it will be my last.

Either that, or I’ll apply to grad school. #hahaha #noreally

Here’s what I wore:

IMG_3649

Jeans: Thrifted, size 26, $8
T-shirt: Thrifted, size 3X, $5
Jersey blazer: Target on clearance, size 4, $11
Shoes: Payless, $11
Bag: Vera Wang, on clearance at Kohls, $25
Total for the whole outfit, including shoes and bag: $60

I dress for comfort at school. It’s a big campus and I spend a lot of time walking good distances between classes. Also, it’s pretty cold here in January, but warm in the classrooms, so layers are important.

I found the top last summer in a thrift store in Las Vegas. I love the little metal discs, because I like pretty things, but I don’t like to wear a lot of jewelry. The blazer is soft and warm enough for between classes, but easy to take off during class without worrying about it wrinkling or anything. I like the bright shirt with the black/gray stripes.

I love my bag. I won’t be able to use it for most of the semester, because the strap is too narrow to comfortably carry a heavy load of books. But for the beginning, when there aren’t a ton of books to lug around, it’s my favorite.

I was immediately drawn to the colors of this outfit when I saw it on Mod Cloth’s style page:

img_462w_a6646210d234What I especially love: the gold flats with yellow tights, and the romantic dress styled bright instead of soft.

Bright Collage

The one thing I’d change about the first photo is the pink. I think green/yellow/orange is amazing. Adding pink is too much for me. So, I replaced the pink belt with orange. I love the way this would go from orange on top to yellow on the bottom, over the green. So pretty!

The dress is from ASOS. It actually came in a mint color, but it’s not available any more. The jade is just as pretty, and it’s on sale for $27.26. The belt is also ASOS and costs $10.55.

The shoes are from Payless for $16.99. They come in sizes up to 13 and in wide width. I actually own these, and love them to pieces. We Love Colors sells bright yellow tights for $15. They have some for $9, too, but the fit was weird for me.

I found the necklace at Etsy. I love it because it only costs $15 and it’s 25-inches long, so it would fit my neck. The purse is the same one the model is holding, from Francesca, only in yellow instead of pink. It’s on clearance for $24.98 and Francesca is having a BOGO sale where a second sale item would be free. Their clothes are straight sized, but they have some pretty cute purses in their clearance section.

So, this whole outfit could be had for $109.76.

The one thing that you could probably save money on is the purse. I see bright yellow purses at thrift stores every week for about $5. I also find big, bold statement-style beaded necklaces for just a couple of dollars pretty often as well. The dress is already marked down to a good price, and ASOS doesn’t even charge for shipping!

If you’re trying to put this together with items you already own, start with a bright, solid-colored dress, then pick two other, contrasting colors. I like how the dress in the first picture is pastel and the accent colors are almost neon. I think you could even go more classic with the dress and do, say, navy with bright green and yellow, or cream with pink and orange.

EVITA_Movie_Poster_by_bcgldnboyWatching Evita made me happy this week.

herb-lemon-roast-chickenI made Ina Garten’s Perfect Roast Chicken this week, and it really was perfect. Yum!

Screen-Shot-2011-09-06-at-11.30.35-AM

I’ll be making these Anthropologie knock-off wrapped bobby pins as soon as I find the right pins.

300Yum. Seriously.

starbuckbottlespicejarsI’m going to have to start drinking Starbucks. STAT. These are adorable.

PRICE REDUCED Vintage Brown 10 Piece Tupperware Pack N Carry

I bought this from Etsy. For $11! Perfect for taking lunch to school. The handle is damaged, but similar old Tupperware lunch sets cost closer to $30- $50, so it’s worth a little E6000 to fix it.
