2013: The Year of Learning to Sew

I have a goal to learn to sew in 2013.

I can manage simple things. Straight seams, hems, etc., but I want to be able to work from a pattern and make my own clothes. I also want to be become better at upcycling thrift store finds. So, I figure if I sew one thing a month and upcycle one thing a month, by December I’ll have at least made headway!

For my January sewing project, I’m going to make this skirt. (Click the picture to see the Angry Chicken tutorial.)

It looks simple enough, but also cute enough that I won’t just make it. I’ll actually wear it!

I’ve had this 2 1/2 yard length of fabric for a while. I picked it up at a thrift store before we moved to Reno. So, at least two years. It’s not vintage, but I love the colors and I think it’s super pretty. Plus it has a great feel to it.

I’ve already ordered the fold-over elastic. In retrospect, I should have checked to see if I could just buy it from Joann’s. I’m so used to living hundreds of miles from the nearest city! Sometimes I forget that there are stores near me now. Too late now. No regrets! As soon as the elastic arrives, I’m going to dive into my first sewing project of 2013!
